Centre's Mandate

Promotion of rural livelihoods and poverty reduction through wage employment

Wage employment is the primary livelihood opportunity among the poor, the effective implementation of schemes thereof assumes greater importance while reducing poverty. In this context, the training initiatives for functionaries concerned are of greater importance. Similarly, in the context of economic reforms and changing socio-economic scenario, the pattern of wage employment and the development interventions are changing from time to time. This in view, it is essential to keep abreast with grass-root situation from time to time through research and documentation processes. Further, it is also essential to develop insights on grassroot situation and advise the policy makers on relevant issues.

Objectives

  • Building repository on wage employment issues in India and developing countries.
  • Building capacities of Rural Development functionaries dealing with wage employment programmes and poverty reduction.
  • Carrying out research on issues related to wage employment vis-a-vis poverty reduction.
  • Building capacities of Mahatma Gandhi NREGA functionaries to ensure effective implementation of scheme thereof.
  • Providing policy advice on wage employment and poverty reduction.
  • Strengthening livelihoods at grass-root level focussing on wage employment generation.
